Cri Primal

Alias:
Gender: Male
Country: France
Description:
Cri Primal was founded in 1984. Members of the rock band Societe Anyonme (S.A.) have been active since 1982. Eric Hervé sent them his songs in the winter of 1982/1983, hoping that the band would add electronic musical elements to it, which they did. The collaboration was repeated even more emphatically by an electronic intervention. Finally, the bassist Philippe Tur invited Eric to play with them on their gig. The gathered trio Cri Primal played on various musical instruments: Eric Hervé (clarinet, sax, noise, lead vocals), Philippe Tur (guitar Aria RS Esprit, bass Guild, Saz, Electrosaz, percussion, background vocals) and Eric Ruiz (synth Yamaha DX7, Korg Mono/Poly, sampler Akai S612, music computer Yamaha CX5M, percussion, drum machine Yamaha RX11, loops, effects).

They self-released one cassette featuring 8 compositions created between 1984 and 1987. The cassette was distributed in 100 copies in 1987 by the S.J. Organisation, a Parisian label of Pascal Dauzier and Metamkine, then under the direction of Albert Durand and Jérôme Noetinger in Grenoble.

Hearing the album, English multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser Fred Frith, with whom Hervé communicated over organizational activities around the Rock In Opposition movement in Grenoble, commented on the music as “dense,” sometimes annoying and sometimes inspiring. And music critic Pierre Durr wrote in Revue & Corrigée magazine that the band's name Cri Primal refers neither to "cri (s)" nor to "primales", that the name is not particularly appropriate for undefined music of intertwined humorous and exotic episodes of new wave, chansons and instrumental-rhythmic parts on the album, but that their music is invigorating.

Cri Primal also appeared on the F-Rants compilation, released in 1988 on S.J. Organisation / Audiofile Tapes, with the as-yet-unreleased song Manifeste, then still untitled.
