Description: A Swiss multi-instrumentalist (b. 1952), audiovisual artist and composer regarded as a leading representative of free improvisation. He came into prominence owing to his involvement in the VOICE CRACK group from 1972 to 2000, where his musical ambitions evolved from free jazz to electro- acoustic music. He began performing on a solo basis in 1978, his first pieces were produced in close collaboration with Andy GUHL, though published under his own name. Most active and artistically acclaimed after 2000, he has also made a number of multimedia installations and soundtracks 81 to experimental films. The sonic material he uses is primarily the sounds of broken or self-modified common electronic devices. The narration of his compositions is a multi-thread one, devoid of any linearity or harmony, abounding in dissonant and contrasting feedback, as well as synthetic noises, irregular and of random structure.
